Xin chào!

With an estimated 94.6 million inhabitants as of 2016, Vietnam is the world’s 14th most populous country, and ninth most populous Asian country. As Vietnam is also one of the fastest growing economies in the world, this makes Vietnam a good location for business expansion. This therefore solidifies the fact that we cannot undermine the importance of the Vietnamese language.

Vietnamese is one of the top 20 most spoken languages in the world. Despite being used almost exclusively in Vietnam, the language has already propagated beyond the country’s borders due to the diaspora of Vietnamese people all over the world. Today, Vietnamese is also spoken in the USA, Cambodia, China, France, Australia, Laos, Canada and a number of other countries. Hence, if you are looking to go global with your products and services, communicating in Vietnamese is definitely important.

Vietnamese is one of the few Asian languages that uses Latin alphabet instead of symbols. As such, the language itself is easy to learn to speak and read. Due to the French occupation, Vietnamese has many words borrowed from the French language. An example will be cà phê (from French café). With the increasing contact with other countries in the 20th century, many new words from English phrases are picked up by the Vietnamese language, for example TV (tivi). As with other Indo-Chinese countries, there are many minority tribes and races speaking different dialects in the different regions of Vietnam.

As with translation of any languages, translation from Vietnamese or into Vietnamese is no easy task. For some, Vietnamese can also be tricky to learn as the language, in its original form, takes on Chinese characters with its unique pronunciation method. There is also a total number of 29 alphabet in the Vietnamese language, and is much higher if diacritical marks are considered.

Not only are there differences in pronunciation, there are also variations in terms of cultural. Vietnamese subscribe to Mahayana Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian beliefs. Apart from these, there are also Catholics in Vietnam. With all of these diverse social values, any translation involving the Vietnamese language will need to consider these subtle differences in culture and beliefs.

All of those mentioned above are merely a speck of sand in an entire beach that could spread for miles.

As such, when handling translation into or from Vietnamese, there are much more things to consider than just getting someone who knows the language to translate for you.

In order to translate the Vietnamese language, it is critical to understand the heritage and language of the intended reader, as well as where he or she now lives. One slight error in the choice of word could all too easily make you sound rude and offensive. Translating word for word too, will make the sentence become wordy, incomprehensible and sound ridiculous at times.

Hence, it is very essential to get the right people with enough training and professional experience to produce translations that are fit for its purpose.
